A Snapshot of Theology in America

A few years ago, LifeWay Research and Ligonier ministries teamed up to test the current trends in American theology. The results were not encouraging.

Notice some of the disturbing trends:

  1. 60% believe Jesus is fully God and fully man.
  2. 63% believe God is perfect and incapable of making a mistake.
  3. 47% believe God is the Author of Scripture (that is, it is a divine book).
  4. 79% believe the Holy Spirit is a force, not a personal being.

It appears that Americans are forgetting who God is and incorrectly understanding who we are. The prophet once cried, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” It does appear that in many places, truth is fallen in the streets.

Yet, these numbers do not discourage me. They give meaning and purpose to the calling God has given to me. To have the ability to work in a Bible college setting, to help train the next generation of Christian leaders, to be part of the solution and not the problem – I still believe God can do a great work in the land that claims “in God we trust.”
